Automatic vs Manual Driving Lessons

Automatic and manual car rental for driving test
It is advisable to take manual driving lessons and test as you then have a choice of driving either a manual or automatic car. If you pass your driving test with an automatic car, you are only licenced to drive an automatic car. We have both automatic and manual cars for hire- rental for driving tests.
While some people like the control of driving a manual car, others prefer the lesser stress linked to the automatic variants. Regardless of whether you choose the former or the latter option, it is a personal preference. Generally, cars with an automatic gear offer better control on open roads along with a good fuel mileage. On the other hand, an automatic car is the better choice for London’s busy, heavy stop-start traffic.
What’s the difference?
In case of automatic transmission, there is an automatic arrangement for the change in gears. For manual transmission, it is imperative that you keep changing gears corresponding to the variations in the speed of your car. That is to say, it is important to keep an eye out for the speed of your car as higher speeds necessitate a higher gear and vice-versa.
Constant gear changing requires the coordination of the clutch pedal and the gear stick. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the clutch is disengaged from the engine and the power from it is separated. This is when you need to change gears. Otherwise, the car can stop abruptly at any point in time.
It’s all about the clutch
The release of the clutch requires more practice than depressing the clutch pedal. Also, it is essential to find the biting point to ensure a smooth take off without stalling or (kangaroo) jumping and smooth transition between gears once the vehicle is in motion. Learning to control the clutch pedal is one of the main points of driving a manual car. It takes both time and patience. Though you may have a few unsuccessful trials, in the beginning, things will fall in place over time with more practice at the subsequent stages. Once you learn how to use the clutch properly, changing the gear becomes easier thereafter.
Why choose automatic driving lessons?
Automatic driving lessons are getting increasingly popular as they are comparatively quicker and easier to learn than a manual car. A list of the benefits of choosing automatic driving lessons is given below.
Advantages of learning with an automatic car
• No stalling car in an automatic or rolling back on hills
• No clutch and gear to coordinate
• A lot more time to concentrate on controlling the car
• Time to develop the judgment of speed and steering skills
• More time to concentrate on reading the road ahead
• Get to test standard within a relatively shorter span of time
• Better suited to the stop/start of town and city driving
• The small price difference between automatic and manual car driving lessons
• Most small cars now offer an automatic option

Driving Test Booking Service
On the day of your Practical Driving Test
You should arrive at least 10 minutes before the practical driving test. Wait in the test centre waiting room with your driving instructor. The Examiner will come out at the appointed time. You will be asked for both parts of your driving licence. Also, you will be asked to sign a form to ensure you live at the address on the licence and that the car is insured for the purpose of the practical driving test. You will be asked to read a number plate from about 20 metres. Thereafter, you will be asked two “show me tell me” questions.
Once the driving test begins, in 1 out of the 3 tests, you will be asked to do an emergency brake, there will be 10 minutes independent driving and you will be asked to do at least one manoeuvre. After approximately 37 minutes at the end of the test, the Examiner will let you know the result of the driving test. The Examiner will explain what faults he has marked at the end of the practical driving test once you are back at the driving test centre.
Pass Plus course
Once you have passed your practical driving test, you will get the opportunity to take part in the Pass Plus scheme to become a better driver. The multiple choice bit is delivered using a touch screen computer and mouse, whereas the hazard perception test records your responses through the use of a computer mouse button. You’ll need to pass both the parts to complete your theory test successfully. If you pass one part and fail the other one, you’ll fail the whole test and will have to take both the parts again.
You can book your Theory or Practical test through the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) website.
